16. Goathill Farm

Goathill Dairy near Sherborne might not be unique, but it very definitely stands out from the crowd.

Alan & Alexa Buckland Goathill Farm

As well as being organic it must be one of the few farms in the country with the patron saint of harvesters literally watching over it...For right in the middle of its buildings is St Peter’s, its own church. So, while the farmyard is normally home to its 260 Holstein and Friesian cattle and small flock of Dorset sheep, every third Sunday it becomes the car park for a different flock – the worshipers visiting the church.

The farm has been in the hands of Alan Buckland’s family since 1959, when they moved from another one nearby. It became organic in 2002. “The reason for that was an ethical one,” says Alan, who took over the running of the farm from his father, in 2000. “I liked the idea of farming in a natural way. Without heavy spraying there is a chance for a lot more wildlife species to come through and it seems to have worked for us.

“We are in a very rural, typically Dorset setting, but there is no doubt the church does make us different.”
