29. Highlands Dairy Farm

Highlands Dairy Farm at Hewish near Crewkerne has been in the Wyatt family since 1959.

Originally bought by John Wyatt’s father, today it’s a real family farm, John manages the crops and ponds, Richard manages the cows and young stock, Richard\\\'s wife milks in the morning, Richard\\\'s sister milks in the afternoons, Johns wife rears the calves and Barry is the head tractor driver, with Barry\\\'s daughter doing some relief milking , at busy times we all muck in together, sharing the rest of the tasks on the 300 acres that they farm.

In addition to the Crewkerne farm the Wyatt’s also rent additional land at nearby Clapton. There they have become involved in a wildlife project developed to encourage the return of water voles to the River Axe.

The 100 strong Highland dairy herd consists mainly of Friesian cattle, with a few Shorthorns as well and at Clapton the Wyatt’s keep around 100 ‘followers’, or young heifers, until they are old enough for milking.

While about half the farm is pasture that’s ideal for grazing, there are also 3 ponds fed by natural springs in which coarse fish like carp, tench, roach and perch are kept for fishing and about 150 acres with red clover and grass leys which are cut to create silage for winter feed.

“There’s a misconception that farming organically, without the use of chemical sprays, is more difficult, but we’ve found that the opposite is true,” says John Wyatt. “We’re very pleased that Coombe encouraged us to become organic. We think the land looks better, that it’s actually easier to look after and the cows seem to be happier as well.”
