15. Cross Farm

One of several unusual things about Liz Stockley and her husband, Peter, is that they are both first generation farmers, with no historical links to agriculture or dairy farming.

“Peter always wanted to farm, but I was an accountant, until I decided we had the business on a secure enough footing to make it possible to join him,” explains Liz.

They have had the 221 acres of Cross Farm, located near Sherborne, since 2001 and acquired the lease on it when it was halfway through the conversion process needed for it to be certified organic. While most dairy farmers keep just one breed of cattle, Liz and Peter have chosen to raise a variety, so they have a mix of around 100 Ayrshires, Shorthorns and NZ Friesians.

“Their one common denominator is that they are all characteristically robust breeds, with good longevity. This is important to us, as our policy is to raise them on pasture for as much of the year as possible and we only bring them indoors when it’s essential,” explains Liz, adding;

“We think the cattle prefer this lifestyle, and that in turn, more relaxed cows produce better milk.”

The Stockleys also believe in homeopathic treatment for any ailments and if you take a look round Cross Farm another noticeable feature is that there are several women helping out with the herd. Says Liz; “There’s no doubt that farming sometimes requires a man’s strength, but we’ve also come to the conclusion that a woman’s approach to dairy farming can often be more relaxing. Having women doing some of the work is a further way to reduce stress and we believe it shows in the condition, health and relaxed outlook of the cows on our farm.”
