Coombe Farms
Other Milk Pool Farms
Mike Tizzard has been farming at Court House Dairy since the mid 1990’s. Like the neighbouring property, Higher Lillington, he runs it in partnership with the Sherborne Cattle Estate. It was given full organic certification in January 2007.
As on the other farms operated by Mike, it is set up to be as self-sufficient as possible, so as well as providing natural grazing for the 250 strong herd of Friesian/Holstein cross dairy cattle, around a third of its 600 acres are used to grow cereals which are used for winter feed.
An old property, Court House itself provides a traditional backdrop for today’s dairy farming and Mike explains: “It’s a beautiful setting, with natural meadows sloping down to the River Yeo that contain lots of wildflowers as well as grassland.”
Before becoming organic the farm was already in the Country Stewardship scheme, which encourages the sustainability of the environment, but Mike adds; “Being organic means the land is under even less stress, so clover has increased in the pastures, which is good for the cattle and the milk they produce.
“We had a good mixed farm here before, but used to sell a lot of the grain. My aim was to get back to balanced rotation and being a self sufficient unit. That’s what we’ve achieved and it’s now an even better place for everyone, with even more fertile pastures for the cattle, a more natural environment in which to work and a dairy herd which is more relaxed, producing purely organic milk.”
