Coombe Farms
Other Milk Pool Farms
Puxton Court Farm at Puxton, not far from Weston Super Mare, could be described as perfect dairy farming land. Flat and benefiting from the mild south west climate, it’s situated on the type of terrain that is ideal for raising and feeding dairy cattle.
The farm’s 100 strong Holstein milking herd, certainly does well there and now so do thousands of visitors... In mid 2007 Alistair Mead and his father Derek opened a major entertainment and education centre there called Puxton Park. It features a play barn, food hall, restaurant and snack bar as well as nature trails and the opportunity for visitors to see the Puxton dairy herd grazing and being milked.
“The aim of the visitor centre is to give people the opportunity of a good day out, while learning more about what they eat and where it comes from, says Alistair, adding:
“There has been dairy farming at Puxton for as long as anyone can remember, so we are following a long-established tradition. My father acquired the farm in 1997 and he took the decision to become organic shortly afterwards. We have since worked closely with organisations like the Avon Wildlife Trust and other environmental groups to enhance the habitat for birds and animals and to make it as sustainable and environmentally-friendly as possible.”
