12. Maundrils Farm

Farming is very much in the blood at Maundrils Farm, which lies on the Somerset Levels, near Burnham on Sea.

Rachel & Joe Horler

Rachel and Joe Horler, who run it, both come from farming families and Rachel’s parents celebrated half a century of working its 197 acres in 2006. Historically the home of a herd of pedigree Holstein cattle, with a bloodline that goes back to 1956 -- when Rachel’s father acquired the farm, it now also keeps 15 pedigree Jersey cattle. The Jersey cattle arrived at the farm with Joe in 1992, the year he married Rachel and the whole family enjoy taking some of these to country shows in the summer.

The decision to turn organic was also taken in 1998, with Rachel and her husband taking the view that they’d like to raise their young family in the most natural surroundings. “We’ve never looked back since” says Rachel, who believes that the hands-on approach they have adopted is better for their cattle as well as their sons, Robert 10 and Philip, 8.

Cows at Maundrils

The farmhouse at Maundrils dates back to the mid 17th century and typical of Rachel and Joe’s attention to detail is their new milking parlour, Built not from prefabricated steel, but a mix of reclaimed and carefully chosen new bricks and tiles. The end result is a building that combines a modern milking facility with an architectural style that perfectly complements the historic buildings around it.

Being on the Levels, the farmland looks out across the Bristol Channel to Wales. This gives it great views, but the couple believe it also makes it one of the windiest in the country!
