25. Manor Farm - Hillfield
Manor farm, at Hillfield, Dorchester, has been in the hands of the Vickery family for more than 35 years, with Stephen and David recently taking over the running of it from their father.
Following the ideal organic practice, as well as breeding their own Holstein/Friesian cross dairy cows they also grow most of the feed used to maintain their organic diet in the winter months.
Says Stephen Vickery: “We were never intensive users of chemical sprays, so becoming totally organic was not such a big step for us as it might have been, but despite this, becoming organic did bring changes.
“The cows seem to prefer the less intensive, more relaxed way of life that is part of the organic ethos, as well allowing us to utilize all of the land that was available to us, this was one of the main reasons for converting to organic farming.”
The Vickery’s now have 170 dairy cows on the 430 acres of land that includes their own farm and an adjoining 200 acres that are rented.
