Coombe Farms
Other Milk Pool Farms
Land Farm near Puxton occupies 600 acres and has a herd of 200 Holstein milking cows, with 200 followers. It became organic in 2001, a time when demand for liquid organic milk was much lower than it is now, most being used for organic yogurt, cream and cheese making.
“We could see that it was going to grow though and my father and I were confident it was the right route to take for the future,” explains Alistair Mead. “There was a growing demand for more natural food. The cows certainly seem to do better with an organic lifestyle and the farm and its land have thrived as well.”
Situated on the Somerset Levels, Land Farm lives up to the name of its surroundings. It is located between the shores of the Severn Estuary and the more rugged countryside of The Mendips, which are home to the famous Cheddar Gorge and the cheese of the same name.
It has now been in the hands of the Mead family for 18 years, a time when there have been numerous changes to the way that food is produced and viewed, but turning organic has been one of the most positive developments says Alistair Mead.
