Coombe Farms
Other Milk Pool Farms
Higher Lillington is one of two farms that Mike Tizzard operates in partnership with the Sherborne Cattle Estate.
Its 400 acres are home to 230 Friesian/Holstein cross cattle and like Mike’s original dairy farm, North Wooton, as well as providing grazing pasture, it also grows much of its own winter feed, with 100 acres given over to growing wheat. Additional feed comes from nearby Court House Dairy, which is also farmed in partnership with the Sherborne Estate.
Living up to its name, Higher Lillington is set in an elevated position, with much south- facing, free-draining land. Mike says it’s ideal for dairy farming, as the herd can generally graze outside, which the cows prefer, from the end of February until the end of November.
From its highest point there are 360 degree views that stretch from the Quantock Hills near Bridgwater in the west to Batcombe, near Shepton Mallet in the east – a distance of around 30 miles.
Mike says: “We became organic in January 2007 following the success we’d had at North Wooton and one of the differences we’ve seen since is a definite increase in the number of brown hares on the land. Feeding the cattle organically seems to agree with them as well and by growing our own winter feed, we are certainly cutting down on the ‘food miles’, which have become a growing concern to an increasing number of people.”
